Pathways to Meaningful Work

At Pacific Opportunities, we specialize in connecting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) to sustainable, long-term employment. Empowering individuals who face systemic and societal barriers to employment is at the core of our mission. With a proven track record of career placement and retention, our time-tested methodology benefits both the dedicated clients we serve and the inclusive employers who hire them.

Our comprehensive approach is structured into three phases:

1. Pre-Employment: Building the Foundation
To ensure a successful partnership, we begin with thorough, individualized assessments. This may include career exploration or a Community-Based Work Assessment (CBWA) conducted in collaboration with Oregon Vocational Rehabilitation. These assessments allow us to align our strategy with our clients’ career goals, skills and long-term aspirations. From there, we actively enhance career readiness by assisting with résumé building, conducting mock interviews and guiding clients through the administrative steps of the job search.

2. Supported Employment: Making the Connection
During this phase, we leverage our extensive network of local business partners across diverse industries, including retail, customer service, hospitality and grocery. Using insights from the pre-employment phase, we strategically match clients with roles that complement their unique abilities and preferences. Once placement is achieved, our team provides hands-on guidance and on-the-job support. This ensures each client feels confident and secure in their new role.

3. Supported Employment Maintenance: Ensuring Long-Term Success
While long-term maintenance is tailored to each individual, this phase is built on a structured framework of routine check-ins and support evaluations. This ensures clients fully understand daily workplace expectations and that the relationship remains mutually beneficial for both employee and employer. While some clients transition quickly to complete independence, others benefit from an extended phase-out period or ongoing support. Ultimately, our overarching goal remains the same: guiding clients toward financial and professional independence through meaningful, long-term employment.

Top Industries for Client Placement: Finding Your Perfect Career Fit

We maintain an extensive portfolio of employer connections across Washington, Multnomah, and Clackamas counties to match our clients with rewarding career opportunities. Rather than limiting our focus to a single sector, we prioritize finding placements tailored to each client’s unique strengths and long-term professional goals. While our network spans numerous fields, there are three key sectors where we consistently secure high-impact placements. Here is a look at what clients can expect from these dynamic industries and the skills they will utilize on the job.

1. Retail and Grocery
The retail and grocery sectors offer versatile roles that serve as an essential backbone to our local communities. Opportunities range from customer-facing positions such as cashiering, greeting and bagging, to behind-the-scenes roles like inventory management and stocking. These workplaces can be collaborative and highly social or quieter and more independent, depending on the role. Clients who thrive on public interaction excel in the front end or sales floor, while those preferring focused, independent work often find great success in inventory or back-room roles.

2. Warehouse and Distribution
For individuals who prefer an active, hands-on work environment, the warehouse and logistics sector offers excellent long-term viability. Positions typically involve product handling, packaging, shipping and receiving and inventory management. This industry is ideal for individuals who prefer to stay moving throughout their shift. Furthermore, these organizations are highly team-driven, fostering strong professional development, camaraderie and clear pathways for internal advancement.

3. Food and Hospitality
The food and hospitality sectors are fast-paced and constantly evolving, requiring diverse talents to keep businesses running seamlessly. Placements range from food preparation and service support (such as bussing and cleaning) to highly visible, customer-centric roles. Because these businesses require a wide spectrum of skills and abilities, they offer incredibly flexible entry points for our clients. Whether a client prefers an active, public-facing environment or a structured, task-oriented routine, this industry offers a niche for every skillset.

Driven by Client Success
These three sectors represent a part of our vast employer network. Because we measure our success by the achievements of the individuals we serve, we continually expand and curate our database of industry partnerships to ensure optimal alignment.
